Nate decided today was a good day to test his skills. He felt like his Pokemon were ready for their first battle. He was looking for something more friendly than competitive since he still did not have much experience. Hopefully, this would be a fun experience for both him and his Pokemon. He had heard the battles had to be moderated by a teacher, so he found Miss Riverton and implored her to go t the Battle Area with him. She had readily agreed. Nate was now standing in the outside area that was designated for battling. He seemed to be the first trainer there. He hoped someone else who was around his skill level would arrive soon so that they could get started.

Paul found the special place for battling easily. It was time to see how strong his Pokemon were and how he was progressing as well. He had done some training with his Pokemon, but battling was the only way to see results. He hoped his opponent would be competent enough. As he set foot on the area, he noticed his roommate Nate was the only student there. Miss Riverton was also there to oversee the battle. He smirked as he walked up to the two of them. This would be a great chance to find out what kind of trainer Nate was. Granted, they were both just starting out, but it would still reveal quite a bit. "I challenge you to a battle," he said in a confident voice once he stopped.

Nate was slightly surprised when it was Paul, his roommate, who entered the battle area first. Well, this was going to be interesting. Paul seemed to think he was such a great trainer and never gave Nate the time of day. Maybe this was Nate's chance to show him that his training techniques could be just as effective as Paul's if not better. Someone needed to put that guy in his place. At the very least, Nate hoped to put up a good fight to prove a point to him. This would be good. "Alright," he said. "You're on." He glanced at Miss Riverton and nodded at her. The teacher followed Nate over to a small section of the battle area. Once he was a good distance away from Paul, Nate took out his first Pokemon. "Come on out, Watcher." The Eevee appeared in front of him, blinking as he took in his surroundings.

Paul nodded in satisfaction. He followed him over to an area but stopped as Nate walked away to put distance between them. He waited for Nate to take out his first Pokemon. An Eevee. Nate had brought him to one of the classes they had together. Now, it was Paul's turn. He took out a Pokeball and threw it. "Thorn, stand by for battle!" His Turtwig appeared and looked excited to be out of his Pokeball. "Focus. You are going to battle." He looked at Nate. "I'll let you go first." Now, it was time for the battle to begin.
Miss Riverton stood in between Nate and Paul but far enough away from them to give room to the Pokemon. When they seemed ready, she said, "Alright, this is a three on three battle without substitutions. When all three Pokemon on one side can no longer battle, the battle is over. Begin!" She picked up flags that would aid her in refereeing and watched the Pokemon closely.

So, they were both beginning with their starter Pokemon. This was going to be fun. He nodded when Paul told him to go first. He figured this was probably more of a show of confidence rather than kindness, but he would take it. He glanced at Miss Riverton when she explained the rules. That all seemed good. Finally, it was time to battle. He quickly looked over Thorn before giving his first order. The Turtwig looked big and strong. Surely he would be able to dodge any attack the Eevee hurled at him. They were going to have to do something different. "Alright, Watcher," Nate said, "Use Tail Whip and then Tackle."
<Good luck!> Watcher said to Thorn, offering him a smile. He liked the Turtwig, and he wished their trainers would let them hang out more. At least they were going to have some fun now. He turned and waved his tail back and forth in order to lower Thorn's defense and make him less wary of him. Then Watcher quickly turned around and charged at the Turtwig.

Thorn was happy to be out of his Pokeball and grew even happier when he saw Nate and Watcher. He liked both of them very much. Paul said he was going to battle, though, so he had to focus. He smiled at the Eevee. <Thanks! You too.> He was excited to engage in his first real battle!
Paul watched as the Eevee used Tail Whip and then run for a Tackle. He refrained from telling his Turtwig to dodge it. Instead, he allowed him to get hit. Once he did, he smiled in satisfaction. "Hmpf." Watcher's attack power was not as strong as Thorn's. That was good to know. Now, it was their turn. "Tackle, let's go!" he commanded Thorn.
Thorn jumped to his feet soon after he was tackled. <I'm still standing!> he said happily. At Paul's words, he ran as fast as he could to ram into Watcher. It would be great! Watcher's Tackle did not seem to do too much damage. Too bad that was the only damaging attack they knew. It looked like they were going to have to win this on skill, not just pure power. They would show Paul there was more to Pokemon battles than he thought. "Quickly, dodge it!" he shouted. He enjoyed being able to hear his opponent's attack ahead of time. It was much different than battling a wild Pokemon. Of course, the other trainer had the same advantage.
Watcher turned on his paws and was able to just miss the Tackle. He grinned in satisfaction. <Nice try.> This was fun!
Nate nodded in approval. "Alright, use Sand Attack." This would lower Thorn's accuracy, which would help them once Watcher was unable to dodge the attacks that were going to be more powerful than his own.
The Eevee raced towards Thorn again. This time, when he got close, he skidded to a halt sending sand hurling into the Turtwig's face. <Take that!>

Paul did not dwell much on the fact that Watcher was able to dodge Thorn's attack. The battle was just beginning. Once Nate said 'Sand Attack,' he countered with, "Withdraw!" Sand Attack would only work if it actually got in the Pokemon's face. If Thorn got into his shell quick enough, it would not work.
Thorn skidded to a stop, disappointed he had not been successful. Would Paul be upset. He didn't have much time to think, though, for Watcher was coming back. Paul spoke too. He did as he said, hiding away in his shell. He had been preparing for an attack, but he only heard and felt sand hit his shell. He loved his shell.
"Use Tackle!" Paul said once the sand was gone. Thanks to his Turtwig's shell, he would still be able to see clearly.
Thorn came out of his shell and ran as fast as he could at Watcher again. Would he hit him this time? He hoped so.

Watcher was surprised when Thorn hid in his shell. He was momentarily confused, not knowing what to do. Unfortunately, he heard Paul's order too late. He was unable to get out of the way of Thorn's Tackle. He grunted as he fell on his side. He quickly got up and flashed Nate a smile to let him know that he was fine.
Nate was frustrated that his plan was thwarted. It looked like they were going to have to be even trickier than that. He decided they needed to attack right away while the two Pokemon were still close to each other. "Tackle!"
Watcher was quick to turn on his paws and race towards Thorn. He hoped he would be able to hit him again, even if it would not do much damage. Every lit bit helped, right?

Thorn was happy he had been able to tackle the Eevee. He hoped Paul was proud. Since the two of them were still pretty close to each other, he was unable to dodge the next attack, even though Paul told him to. He jumped up right away, though, and grinned at Watcher.
Paul could see Nate was frustrated at what just happened. Good. "Dodge it!" he ordered when Nate called out another Tackle, but he knew even with Thorn's speed the short distance was a problem. He smirked. "Is that all the attacks your Eevee knows?" Thorn knew another attack, but he would save that for later. Right now, Tackle would do. "Tackle again! Then move away from him," he instructed his Turtwig.
Thorn did as he was told. He ran at Watcher another time, determined to succeed again. After that, he would run toward Paul and then flip around as fast as he could. Species: Turtwig Name: Thorn Gender: male Level: 9 Attacks: Tackle, Withdraw, Absorb Hit By: Tackle Used: Tackle Health: Low Green

Watcher was pleased with their strategy so far. Unfortunately, the distance problem worked both ways. He was bowled over again by the Turtwig. As he got up, he watched Thorn run away form him. Great. Now they were going to have to think of something else.
Nate was irritated by Paul's comment, but he tried to not let it show. He decided he was not going to let his roommate get to him. He was not going to give him the reaction he wanted. "The magnificence of Eevee lie in their evolutionary ability, not their basic attacks," he said calmly. And this was more important to him as a breeder. He quickly surveyed the situation. "Watcher, use Sand Attack and then Tackle." He figured that Thorn would only have time to respond to one attack. If he used Withdraw again, he would not have enough time to dodge the Tackle.
Watcher grinned. "Ok!" He ran for Thorn again. This time, he spun around and used his bushy tail to hurl sand at the Turtwig. Then he turned back around and ran in for the Tackle.

"Hmpf." It was his loss. Paul focused back on the battle. Using both Sand Attack and Tackle was not ideal, but he would make it work. "Thorn, Withdraw, and stay in there!" He would not be able to dodge the Tackle after going into his shell to avoid the Sand Attack, but his shell would still help him take the Tackle. He would get hit, but it would not be as bad as if he had gotten out of his shell.
Thorn grinned at his successful Tackle as he ran towards Paul. After a good distance, he spun around to face Watcher. At Paul's word, he withdrew back into his shell, and he felt sand hit him. Then, he felt the body of the Eevee crash into him. It didn't hurt too much, though, and he was glad to have his shell. However, the attack caused his shell to skid back, and it scared him.
Paul was pleased Thorn's shell protected him well. When the attack was done, he ordered, "Absorb, go!"
Thorn came out of his shell, feeling a bit weird from being tackled in his shell. He grew happy, though, the instant he heard 'Absorb.' <This is my favorite attack!> Concentrating on Watcher, light came out of the Turtwig and attached to the Eevee, draining some of his energy. <Hey! That's not fair!> Watcher cried when all he slammed into was a shell. His attacks already did not do much damage. How was he ever supposed to beat this guy if he kept hiding in his shell? He looked at his trainer in hope. He would know what to do! Unfortunately, there was no way to avoid Absorb, and a lot of energy was sucked out of the little Eevee. He gritted his teeth as he took the pain, determined to remain strong.
Nate was highly irritated by what he just witnesses, but he hid it for the most part. "I see you can only win on the defensive," he said to Paul casually. If only he could use Blaise... Even if he could use the Charmander next, the Turtwig would still be at a much higher level, making the two of them evenly matched at best. Watcher needed to wear Thorn down enough so that Blaise could beat him next. "It's ok, Watcher. Use Tail Whip and then Tackle, quickly."
Watcher nodded. He was determined to not let his trainer down. He swished his tail at Thorn and then went running towards him, hoping that he would not go hiding again. <Come on and face me!>

Paul clenched his teeth lightly at Nate's comment. Then he smirked slightly. "And I see you can't hope to win either way. Pathetic. We'll see who's stronger." And it was going to be him. He knew there wasn't much point in trying to dodge the attack, so he allowed Thorn to take it. Once he did, he said, "Tackle, let's go!" One more hit, and the Eevee would be down.
Thorn felt really good from the Absorb when the energy returned to him. However, he quickly had to stand his ground when Paul did not instruct him further as Watcher ran towards him. <Give me all you've got!> he welcomed. He fell back as he was hit. <Ow.> As soon as he could, he sprang to his stubby little feet. <I'm fine.> He raced forward as quick as he could to tackle Watcher once more. Nate did not let Paul faze him. "The battle has hardly begun, roomie," he said. He also doubted that one battle could prove who was stronger. That was something that developed over time. They were just beginning, after all. Nate did not have much time to react to Paul's command. In a split-second decision, he said, "Watcher, up!"
The Eevee knew what his trainer was referring to. This was an improv technique they had been working on together. He was eager to find out if it would do them any good. Right when Thorn was about to hit him, he leapt into the air just high enough so that he landed on the Turtwig's back.
"Down and Tackle!" Nate ordered.
Watcher leapt forward and landed on the ground. As quickly as he could, he turned around and ran towards Thorn, hoping to get him from the back due to disorientation of the trick move.
