Paul headed toward the Virtual Training Machines with Thorn in his Pokeball. When he had heard about the machines, he instantly thought it would help improve Thorn's abilities greatly. He walked into the room and saw many machines. Not many people were using them, which was just fine. Paul took out Thorn's Pokeball and tossed it open. "Thorn, stand by for battle!"
<What are we doing> Thorn asked excitedly. He glanced around him with a confused expression. <Are we playing video games or something?>
Paul walked over to a machine and placed a helmet on Thorn and the other on himself. "This will help train you. Now, prepare to fight!"

A Cyndaquil appeared before Paul and Thorn. "Quil!" it said. It fired up its back and waited for the Turtwig to make the first move.

Paul knew the Pokemon would be a fire-type, so he wasn't surprised when a Cyndaquil appeared. Hopefully Thorn won't be afraid, he thought with a roll of his eyes. He was about to give Thorn a command when he realized he had hopped forward to make friends with it.
<Hello! My name's Thorn!> The hyper Turtwig greeted the Cyndaquil. <I love to run around and play. Do you want to play with me?> He jumped up and down with extreme enthusiasm. The poor, little Pokemon didn't realize the Pokemon before him was not real.

The computerized Cyndaquil just stood there. It assumed Thorn's attack must have failed, so it prepared to attack itself. It opened its mouth and dark, thick smoke began to fill the room.

Thorn buried his head in the ground as black smoke filled the air around his little world. <Can we go back? I don't like this place. How did we even get here?> He whimpered, not knowing where Paul was or where he was. <Paul, where are you?>
Paul covered his face with his arm to protect himself from the smoke. "Thorn, you stupid Pokemon!" He growled through the smoke. "Stop whimpering and run straight into the smoke toward the Cyndaquil and use tackle!" He demanded.
Thorn lifted his head up, but all he saw was black. He felt lost and helpless. For a moment he thought he was blind. Still, not wanting to be punished by Paul, he raced through the dark, thick air blindly at full speed, not knowing what he would hit.

The Cyndaquil, being accustomed to seeing in smoke, was able to easily dodge Thorn, or so it thought... His left leg was hit by the Turtwig and the Cyndaquil spuna round in a circle. It stood up and started running towards Thorn for a Tackle of its own.

The Turtwig began to dance happily that he had hit the Pokemon, so he missed the order to dodge it. Realizing there was a charging Cyndaquil aiming for him, he tried to leap out of the way, but it was too late. There was also still some smoke, so he got hit by the Cyndaquil's tackle. He lay still for a moment before leaping up with some scratches on his body. <What now?> He looked at Paul for help.
Paul gritted his teeth. He wondered how the game worked. How did the game know when one of the Pokemon was defeated? He shrugged it away and focused on his Turtwig. "How about listening to me instead of celebrating after every move you make?" He shook his head. "Use Tackle!" He ordered.
Thorn nodded and ran straight for his opponent. <I'll get you all the way this time!> He hoped he would be able to defeat the fire-type.

The Cyndaquil tried to get out of the way of Thorn, but it failed. It slowly stood back up. It used Leer against the Turtwig.

Thorn hid his head away from the Cyndaquil, whimpering.
Paul sighed. Leer made Thorn's defense less powerful, but he didn't have anything else to work with. Tackle would have to work against the Cyndaquil. The good thing was that the Cyndaquil wasn't a high enough level to know any fire attacks that would have harmed Thorn a lot quicker. "Use Tackle again!"
Daring to raise his head, Thorn saw that the Cyndaquil was waiting. He gripped the ground beneath him better before charging once again at his opponent, determined to hit it again.

Once again the Cyndaquil was hit by Thorn's Tackle. It got up slower this time. It tried for its own Tackle, although this one had a lot less power.

Knowing not to cheer, Thorn was able to dodge the weaker tackle. He grinned when he landed back on his feet, but he kept his eyes on the Cyndaquil. <What now?>
Paul knew it was only time before the Cyndaquil collapsed by the way it was slowly getting up. He was pleased that Thorn had been able to dodge the tackle. "Use tackle and make sure you're running fast!"
Thorn nodded and backed up for more room before charging at the other Pokemon, eager to defeat his first Pokemon.

Thorn slammed into the Cyndaquil's side. The Cyndaquil slide across the white floor. It didn't get up. A mechanical voice said, "Congratulations, you have one. Take your helmets off if you are finished."
Thorn has gained 2 levels.

Paul nodded, but rolled his eyes when Thorn began to dance around again. "Ok, you've defeated one. Let's see how well you face up to another." He frowned slightly. The higher the level his Turtwig got, the higher the opponents did. He wondered how long it would be before the opponent would be strong enough to use fire attacks. This machine is good for creating strategies around a Pokemon's weakness.
Thorn immediately stopped, a little crestfallen but brightened up. I just defeated my first Pokemon! He eagerly waited for another opponent.

After a minute a Growlithe appeared before Thorn. It growled, prepared to fight.

Paul hoped Thorn wouldn't be afraid to keep battling more fire Pokemon. He needs to get over his fear in order to be more powerful. "There's no use being afraid. Use Tackle!"
Thorn cowardly shrank back. The Growlithe was so much bigger than the Cyndaquil! Remembering he previous victory, he obeyed Paul and forcefully ran at the fire Pokemon, determined not to be defeated. I'm not gonna be afraid of a fire type!
